Sweating Saris is a unique performance, where Dr. Priya Srinivasan, Ramya Harishankar, and carnatic vocalist Uthra Vijay interact with the audience, as they bring to life the book, "Sweating Saris: Indian Dance as Transnational Labor", published by Temple University Press, 2012. The performance is humorous, yet provocative. It explores dance, not just as an aesthetic form, but also its relationship to historical, cultural, socio-political, radicalised and gendered forms of power. At its heart, Sweating Saris reveals invisible lives and the labour of dancers. The performance runs just under 90 minutes. This will be followed by a short panel discussion between the performing artists, Mangai Arasu and Veena Basavarajaiah.

About the Artists
Dr. Priya Srinivasan is a dancer, choreographer and scholar who was a tenured Associate Professor of Dance at the University of California in Critical Dance Studies. Originally from Melbourne, Priya was trained in the classical and contemporary Indian and Asian arts by Dr. Chandrabhanu and performed extensively with the Bharatam Dance Company. With a PhD in Performance Studies from Northwestern University, Priya has created the form of "talking dances" based on her award-winning book Sweating Saris Indian Dance as Transnational Labor (2011).
Priya has also created performance based research into making visible devadasi and untold histories of women from an interrogation of the archive such as ‘Becoming Subbulakshmi’ and ‘Nagarathnammal's Dream’ bringing two important figures from Indian history. Her work brings together live bodily performance with visual art, interactive multimedia and digital technology to think about archives of the body, migration, and female labour.

Ramya Harishankar is the artistic director of the Arpana Dance Company (ADC) and School, a premier school of Bharatanatyam in California. In 2007, the 25th anniversary of Arpana was recognized with several citations/awards from the State Senate, County of Los Angeles and cities and organizations in Southern California, as well as the Helene Modjeska Cultural Legacy award from Arts OC, the countywide arts organization in Orange County. ADC has performed in the US, Europe, Japan and India. Harishankar and ADC have also received several grants from the California Arts Cuncil, ACTA and the NEA. As an artist on Segestrom Performing Arts Center‘s Arts Teach roster, she has been sharing her art with school children all over S. California. Her solo career spanning more than three decades has taken her all over the world.

Uthra Vijay is the Artistic Director of Keerthana School of Music in Melbourne that she founded in 2003. She is a versatile artist, composer and educator who trained with S.P. Ramh in the late legendary violinist Lalgudi Jayaram’s School of Music. She has brought her extensive solo performance experience from India to Australia, singing classical music concerts and for dance. She has also collaborated and performed with Dr. Priya Srinivasan in major festivals in Australia and Europe.
